What We Believe
On patience and ownership
Markets reward novelty loudly and durability quietly. Over a long enough period, the quiet one wins. Most of what we have learned as investors, across the United States, Europe and Asia, comes back to that observation, and NightArk is built around it.
Novelty is easy to find and easy to fund. Durability is harder to see. It sits in businesses that have compounded for years without much attention: profitable, cash-generative, run by people who know their customers well. These are the companies we want to own, and we would rather wait for the right one than own many of the wrong ones.
The freedom to wait and the freedom to act quickly come from the same place. An investor who is not forced to deploy on a timetable can let most opportunities pass, and can move decisively when the rare one arrives. We have organised NightArk so that we are never in a hurry to invest and never too slow to commit.
When we do commit, we take substantial positions and we stay close to them. A meaningful stake earns a seat at the table, and the table is where value is made: in the choice of leadership, in how capital is allocated, in deciding when to sell and when to keep compounding. Small positions spread widely give an investor exposure to many outcomes and influence over none of them.
Our best investments have come from founders and managers we knew well before we invested. Access to the right companies is earned slowly, through years of useful work alongside entrepreneurs, and it is the one part of this business that cannot be bought. We intend to keep earning it.
We favour businesses that pay their way. A company that generates cash can fund its own growth, return capital to its owners and come through the years when markets are unkind. It also gives its owners the most valuable thing an investor can have, which is time.
Time only helps if interests stay aligned. Too many structures reward activity over judgement. We want ours tied to our partners’ for as long as an investment lasts, with full transparency on every decision. That is why each opportunity is presented to our partners on its own merits, and why they decide independently whether to join us.
None of this is new. It is simply harder to practise than to state, and practising it is the whole of our job.
